Following on from my previous post (WE DON’T FEAR ITALY) on the use of language and the effect it has on us and those around us from some of the English squad and Manager; this article further demonstrates where and what the focus was on sadly.
England’s early demise and exit could be predicated from the start.

Be careful what you name and label as it may become your own reality!.
The conscious mind is the Captain with the Subconscious mind being the foot soldier who always delivers without fail. “Thoughts become things” as we all know don’t we?
What is your internal dialogue as you read this?
What we focus on we will feel and experience.
As you continue to read the quotes from the England Captain you will easily NOW see that a pattern of defeat was being spoken about and became the focus for all in the dressing room.
We have to remember that words have energy and are contagious, whether you are the leader or a member of the team, whether in business or sport.
Captain Gerrard warns of ‘terrible, long summer’ if Roy Hodgson’s team lose their second game in five days at the World Cup.
‘There is no hiding place for a player when you go out of a tournament earlier than you expect”.
“Basically, to realise it could be a terrible, long, frustrating summer if we don’t get it right on Thursday,” Gerrard recalled.
“ It can be tough and it can take an awful long time to get over it. A lot of people know that in the dressing room but there are a few young lads in there too, so it was important for them to realise what is at stake and how important this game is”.
“I have been there. I have had that feeling. So I know what that feeling is about and that is the feeling I don’t want on Friday morning”.
“It wasn’t a message to scare any of the lads but it was a wake-up call to everyone in the room. It wasn’t to scare anyone, or intimidate anyone, but this is the reality of where we are and we need everyone focused and right on it, individually and collectively, on Thursday, otherwise it is going to be a terrible, long summer”
It “wasn’t a message to scare” is the exact same language pattern as “we don’t fear Italy’ is it not? see previous post.
This is read by the subconscious mind that knows everything as “a message to scare”
By now you will have a feel for language and its power and the effect it has on us and those whom we lead whatever the environment.
The lesson here is:- mind your language!! it is easy to re wire and open up new exciting and serving neurological pathways as was evidenced by my work at Inverness Caley Thistle; whose success is still an enigma to many in the sporting media!! Similarly the dramatic freefall at Hibernian Football Club following their short success after I worked with the team in Dec 2013 is still being talked about and a cause of concern to many.
I am a language and behavioural strategist who consults and creates award winning teams and individuals in business and sport. My keynote addresses are on this subject.
